Marko Jakše is one of our most prominent and authentic figurative painters. His works are provocative, but also melancholic, thematically entirely unconstrained and uncensored. He is a subtle observer, lucidly referring visual qualities and transforming them into painting matter.
Jakše's quality range is immense, as he continues to explore the notions of figure, portrait, flora and fauna, both in closed interiors and in open landscapes. He has reached a level of sophistication typical of old masters, and surpassed it: his style cannot be defined as belonging to any particular historical period (genre), and, although drawing on archetypes, his works piercingly refer to the here-and-now, appearing as entirely contemporary and subversive.
Marko Jakše (1959) graduated from the Academy of Fine Arts and Design in Ljubljana in 1987. Since then he has lived and worked as a freelance artist, exhibiting in numerous solo and group exhibitions home and abroad, and winning several international recognitions and awards, most recently the Prešeren Fund Award in 2015.
